Self-organization is a process of attraction and repulsion in which a system, usually an open system, increases in complexity without the influence of an outside force. An open system in the natural sciences is one in which both energy and matter can flow in and out of. It is ubiquitous in the natural world; an example is a colony of termites that builds a nest based on the behavior patterns and responses of the individual animals.
